Article: City man was very handy, loved working with kids?

NEW HAVEN -- William Freeman Sr. was a stern but fair man who loved to work with children. "He was popular with all the neighborhood kids," said a daughter, Damonne Jones of New Haven. "He was very handy and taught them about fixing their bicycles and how to do various repair jobs around the house. He also helped many of them find their first jobs. And he was on a first-name basis with everyone in his neighborhood."

Freeman died Sept. 11 at age 80.

Born Feb. 9, 1929, in Virginia, a son of Leon and Mable Freeman, he moved to New Haven as a young man and worked at Olin Corp. and Southern Connecticut State University. He lived in New Haven most of his life.
