Article: K2 survivor from Hermosa tackles the Himalayas

A 24-year-old alpinist who grew up in Hermosa Beach wasmore than 18,000 feet high today on Shishapangma, the world's 14th-tallest mountain, in the Tibetan Himalayas.

"We're waiting in advanced base camp for better weather," Nick Rice told City News Service via satellite phone earlytoday. "We're on the verge of winter here, and the next few days are supposed to be windy with heavy snow."

When the weather clears, Rice and his partner, Mario Panzeri, 45, of Italy will attempt to climb a potentiallytreacherous route to the main summit of Shishapangma, which rises to more than 26,280 feet above sea level.
