A 24-year-old alpinist who grew up in Hermosa Beach wasmore than
18,000 feet high today on Shishapangma, the world's 14th-tallest
mountain, in the Tibetan Himalayas.
"We're waiting in advanced base camp for better weather," Nick
Rice told City News Service via satellite phone earlytoday. "We're
on the verge of winter here, and the next few days are supposed to
be windy with heavy snow."

of Italy will attempt to climb a potentiallytreacherous route to the
main summit of Shishapangma, which rises to more than 26,280 feet
above sea level.
