George Selaiden first saw the saxophone in the shop window when he was a young boy.

He kept walking by the store to catch a glimpse of the gleaming instrument and occasionally went inside to admire it. One day the shop owner asked him if he was there to pick it up. Selaiden didn't know his father had secretly bought it for him.

When Selaiden began taking lessons at the age of 9, he had no idea the saxophone would someday lead to a career playing in bands that backed Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball and Ricky Nelson.

Selaiden, 87, of Elm Grove, died Saturday of pneumonia at Froedtert Hospital.
