Article: Innovation zone panel gets ball rolling

Deputy State Superintendent Jack McLanahan says West Virginia's innovation zone legislation was inspired by similar measures in Colorado and the state of Washington.

But Colorado's program is almost as new as West Virginia's and McClanahan seemed to know little about Washington's.

McLanahan did not seem bothered about the lack of precedent.

"We see this as a real first step for our state to come into compliance for where the federal government wants us to be," he said.

He said the initiative also might help West Virginia garner some of the forthcoming $4.2 billion Race to the Top fund that President Obama announced over the summer.
