Article: Baltimore city officials work voluntarily on furlough days

Friday morning, anyone who stops by City Hall will find the door locked.

Same with the Abel Wolman Municipal Building and the Benton Building, home to the city's planning, housing and permitting offices.

That's because Friday is the first of five mandatory furlough days that all city employees must take as Baltimore struggles to balance its fiscal 2010 budget.

But even on mandatory unpaid vacation days like Friday, business will go on as usual. Baltimore's elected officials by and large seem to be committed to working voluntarily. City Council representatives and other high-ranking officials will try to use their white, electronic key-cards to put in a few quiet hours at their offices. ...
