Fuel economy is a pressing issue for all motorists these days,
yet car makers continue to promote speed and performance, rather
than frugality, as being the selling propositions. Mazda is actually
one of the handful of car makers to be enjoying continued demand in
a very fraught market. So, putting together an entry in the annual
ALD Automotive/Total Excellium/Fleet World MPG Marathon for the
company's hottest hatchback, the 260bhp Mazda3 MPS, and hoping to
prove the car's worth on the efficiency front, may have seemed like
an improbable task with an unfeasible outcome.
