SAN FRANCISCO -- The recent suicide of a young San Francisco art student who struggled with depression barely made news headlines, but the way Anton Jungenberg died highlights a rare form of self- destruction that is particularly devastating to those left behind.

Jungenberg, 19, set himself on fire at a gas station in the Sunset District in the still-dark morning of Sept. 3, ending a life that one family member characterized as one of depression immersed in a dark "culture of death" that he expressed through music, paintings and skull-adorned clothing.
