It is 13 years since, in honouring a promise given to my friend
Laurens van der Post not long before his death, I began reporting
here on one of the more chilling tragedies of our modern world. This
has been the ruthless campaign by the Botswanan government to expel
the last groups of Bushmen from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve,
where Botswana's constitution guaranteed their right to remain in
perpetuity, as the last survivors living in the wild of the original
inhabitants of southern Africa.
Anyone might be disturbed by this story, not least those of us in
