Industrious, entrepreneurial, risk-taker. Many of the pioneers of
Redlands fit all these descriptions. One of them was N.L. Levering.
At times in his career he was a real estate developer, teacher,
newsagent, banker, and highway builder. Not one to let much grass
grow under his feet.
Levering's family had been pioneers in Illinois, Missouri and
Iowa. His father, Noah Levering, was an attorney and probate judge
in Independence, Mo., the Jackson County seat.
Levering was born in Mecklin, Mo., March 28, 1869. During his
childhood, his family moved to Greenwood, Mo., where his father
entered the mercantile business. They remained in that city until
