Smoking enforcement asked
A recent survey using youth decoys revealed that more than 25
percent of tobacco retailers in Paramount are willing to sell
cigarettes to minors. This rate is twice as high as the statewide
average of 12.6 percent. Last month Paramount's Tobacco Free Youth
Coalition urged the Paramount City Council to put a tobacco retail
licensing ordinance on the city's agenda. The City Council refused
and the city manager explained why in a letter to youth advocates.
The City Council wanted to avoid "an adverse economic impact" on
businesses that sell cigarettes, she said.
We still can't believe it. How could local elected officials in
our small city of Paramount be more worried ...
