Verizon cuts 200 Mass., R.I. jobs; union saves 60

BOSTON - Verizon cut about 200 jobs in Massachusetts and Rhode Island on Friday in the company's latest round of layoffs, but at least 60 jobs were saved through union negotiations, according to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2222.

The Dorchester-based union reported that the telecom company laid off 196 workers in both states on Friday, and six Verizon Business technicians were laid off last week.

The layoffs are part of the 8,000 job cuts nationwide that New York-based Verizon announced over the summer. A Verizon spokesman said only a small portion of those job cuts are being done through layoffs. ...
