Article: Library's high-tech boost pays off Gadgets help shrinking staff serve more customers

Efficiency through technology -- that's a phrase people often used to justify spending big money on everything from software to machines.

But the Wauwatosa Public Library has proven its investment was well spent. In the three years since it implemented the $300,000 radio frequency identification system, the library has lost staff but still managed to handle increased customer use.

For library patrons, the most evident aspects of the RFID system are the self-checkout stations. At this point, more than half of cardholders check out materials using the technology, Library Director Mary Murphy said.
