Out in the woods this past weekend, my husband was looking for
footprints. He saw tracks from squirrels, coyotes, beavers and deer.
Hank did not see a single carbon footprint, though he was making
one. Carbon was all around him, too. Carbon crashed to the ground
beside his body (luckily, it missed him) It blew past him, coursed
through him, and roared in his ears. Carbon fills your life, too,
circling around and through you. Like now. Carbon is the second most
common element in your body. Mostly, you are all wet, filled with
water, or H[sup 2]0 (whose every molecule is two atoms of hydrogen,
one of oxygen.) You, a bee, a birch, a bear, a buttercup, and my
