ELINOR Ostrom, of Indiana University, has become the first women
to win the Nobel Prize in economics. Her work is generally taken to
refute the idea that natural resources such as forests or fish
require a specific owner (or regulation) to husband them - otherwise
a general free-for-all will take place, leading to the plundering of
the environment.
Rather like the award of the peace prize to Barack Obama, critics
have been quick to gainsay the award to Ostrom, claiming it smacks
of political correctness rather than a reward for economic
scholarship.
She shares the dollars 1.4 million (GBP 900,000) prize funded by
