Article: Council tight-lipped over possible bailout; CHRISTCHURCH ARTS FESTIVAL

The Christchurch City Council has ruled out buying the cash- strapped Christchurch Arts Festival but remains tight-lipped about a possible bailout.

Festival organisers asked the council for financial help last week after significant losses at the event in July and August.

It is believed city councillors met behind closed doors for more than two hours to debate the issue last Thursday.

A council spokeswoman said yesterday that buying the festival was not being considered, but she could not comment further.

Arts Festival Trust chairwoman Clare Murray said the trust was working to resolve the matter. She did not anticipate a public statement "for a while" as the trust focused "on the doing ...
