Fourth- and eighth-graders in Wisconsin have improved their
scores on a national mathematics test since the early 1990s, but the
gap between the performance of the state's white and black students
has not gotten any better, according to test results released
Wednesday.
The state's math results from the National Assessment of
Educational Progress showed little change from the last time scores
for those age groups were released two years ago. Fourth-graders in
Wisconsin posted the same average score -- 244 -- that they had two
years ago, although the percentage of students deemed proficient or
higher in math slid to 45% from 47%. The average score for eighth-
