Article: Dow moves above 10,000 Index has regained half of what it lost in downturn

A year after the Dow Jones industrial average plunged amid a financial crisis and panic selling, the stock index burst through the psychologically important 10,000 mark Wednesday -- a sign that investors believe an economic recovery is under way.

Encouraged by better-than-expected earnings from JPMorgan Chase & Co. and semiconductor firm Intel Corp., the Dow rose 144.8 points to close at 10,015.86. It was the highest close for the index since Oct. 3, 2008, when the nation's financial system was in the grip of a crisis that prompted bank bailouts and other government intervention.
