When Michael Laird came to Oklahoma City about 30 years ago, he
thought he had come to a place where he had no connections. Wrong.
In his talk as recipient of the Crystal Orchid Award from the Myriad
Botanical Gardens Foundation, he shared an early connection dating
back to the 1930s.
His father, George Laird, shared training experiences with
Oklahoman John E. Kirkpatrick while both were attending the U.S.
Naval Academy, when Kirkpatrick was in the 1931 class and George was
in the 1933 class. The two were both naval officers; Kirkpatrick
became an admiral and George captained a submarine. Both served in
