Article: Cyclones pin hopes on juco transfer

AMES, Iowa - Former Iowa State star Wesley Johnson's stunning transfer before the start of last season left the Cyclones with a huge hole at small forward.

Iowa State never found anyone who could take Johnson's place, and that was one of the many reasons the Cyclones stumbled to a 15-17 record and a 4-12 mark in the Big 12.

Enter Marquis Gilstrap, an athletic 6-foot-7 junior college transfer that Iowa State is hoping can solve their quandary at small forward and along the wing. The rest of the Big 12 seems to like him, too: the coaches have voted Gilstrap the Big 12 preseason Newcomer of the Year.
