Described by friends as a fun, athletic and deeply religious man,
U.S. Air Force Capt. Mark R. McDowell was looking forward to a lot.
The 26-year-old was a talented fighter pilot who had been married
for almost two years to another Air Force Academy graduate.
On July 17, an F-15 Eagle flown by McDowell crashed near the
Ghazni Province of Afghanistan, killing him and a fellow airman,
Capt. Thomas J. Gramith, 27, of Eagan, Minn.
McDowell, of Colorado Springs, was in the 336th Fighter Squadron
and was based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C.
