For more than 40 years M.S. Carter Antiques, in a renovated 19th- century warehouse on the waterfront in Portsmouth, N.H., has been a popular destination for antiques lovers.

The owners, Winthrop and Margaret Scott Carter, lived above their shop in a duplex filled with antiques and paintings. Winthrop died in 1983 and after the death of Margaret, better known as Scotty, in June, the Carters' personal collection is to go on the auction block.

Next Sunday at 10 a.m. at Center of New Hampshire in Manchester, their longtime friend Ronald Bourgeault, president of Northeast Auctions, will sell the collection except for pieces left to their children.
