NORMAL - As defensive coordinator at Purdue for 12 years, Brock Spack used to despise bye weeks when the Boilermakers were playing well.

Yet as first-year head coach at Illinois State, Spack admitted Tuesday the first Saturday of the season without a game scheduled "comes at a real good time."

At 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, ISU does not return to action until an Oct. 31 conference game at Missouri State.

"The guys are a little nicked up this time of year," said Spack. "We've had a pretty tough stretch of pretty stout opponents. And we thought they looked a little tired Saturday (in a 38-21 win over Indiana State)."
