Family members, friends and co-workers were stunned and saddened
last week by the sudden death of Shelby Young, veteran newspaperman
and Gazette-Mail Metro Putnam reporter for Charleston Newspapers.
Young died at home sometime during the afternoon of Oct. 22. He
was 63.
Phone conversations he had with Metro Editor Diane Smith and
others indicated that Young, who was recovering from a sinus
infection, was at work on the next edition of Metro Putnam on the
day he died.
He was found by his wife, Laura Jane Young.
True to his rural roots growing up in Roane County, Young's style
of newspaper reporting was relaxed and informal. His columns and
