Superblock razing nears
Baltimore officials on Wednesday approved the first contract for
demolition as part of the proposed $100 million Superblock
redevelopment project.
The city will pay P&J Contracting Co. Inc. $1.2 million to knock
down 12 buildings on the north side of West Lexington Street between
Park Avenue and the former Stewarts department store building, which
now houses the headquarters of Catholic Relief Services.
An official from the Baltimore Development Corp. said that the
contractor has 160 days to complete the job, which has not yet been
permitted. Some of the buildings in question are owned by the city,
others by the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc.
