Article: Monrovia merchants offer alternative to Halloween sugar rush

MONROVIA - Monrovia Unified School District has an award-winning nutrition and fitness program recognized by the governor - but it's no match for Halloween, school officials said.

It also doesn't help that on the No. 1 candy holiday of the year, the city closes off several streets in Old Town Monrovia so that merchants can pass out thousands of pieces of candy to the 3,000 or so trick-or-treaters who show up.

This Halloween, however, the school district is working with the merchants to offer some healthier alternatives like pretzels and non- candy treats like stickers and pencils, said Valerie Parsons, health and nutrition coordinator for the district.
