SOMETHING'S ALWAYS happening on the New Haven Green. Here's what
I saw last Thursday afternoon when I walked across that grand
expanse: a work crew in a big truck, arriving with a 65-foot-tall
Christmas tree; and an elm tree activist waiting for me by the
center flagpole, holding a 3-foot-tall elm seedling in a pot. Oh,
the irony! A gigantic dead Norway spruce, brought in from Shelton to
be sacrificed as the city's Christmas tree on the Green and a tiny
but live, growing elm that one day will thrive in one of New Haven's
neighborhoods.
It was a gorgeous autumn day, a perfect time to discuss the
spreading of elm trees in "the Elm City." Yes, it seemed a tad
premature for that Christmas tree ...
