My happiest Halloween was the year I dressed as a die, wearing a box painted white with black dots on each side.

My best friend, Samantha, wore a sandwich board painted like a domino. We were quite the pair.

The worst Halloween was the year I went as a devil and lost my pitchfork. We even retraced our steps through our Colorado neighborhood.

No dice. No pitchfork.

What remained constant through the years was the promise of good junk food on All Hallows' Eve. It usually started with a supper like hot dogs and tater tots, because Mom was in a rush to get our faces painted and our butts out the door before dark.
