Article: Leader: Ministers must take their share of the blame for Nimrod tragedy

THE report into the crash of the RAF Nimrod spy plane in 2006, with the loss of all 14 servicemen on board, comes to a damning conclusion.

Charles Haddon-Cave QC found the loss of the Nimrod MR2 over Afghanistan occurred because of a "systemic breach" of the military covenant, the principle which underpins the relationship between the country and its servicemen and women.

Under the covenant, which formally applies only to the army but is held to cover the air force and the navy, those who we ask to risk their lives for their country should be valued and respected. They and their families should be "sustained and rewarded" by the state.
