Auditor seeks help in thwarting fraud
The West Virginia Auditor's Office is seeking help to prevent
scammers from obtaining payments intended for companies that do
business with the state.
Earlier this year, the auditor's office paid nearly $2 million to
scammers who had set up phony bank accounts in the name of
legitimate state vendors.
The auditor's office wants to hire Dun & Bradstreet of Chicago to
verify the identities of vendors. The office has asked the state
Purchasing Division for a contract with the firm.
Department of Administration spokeswoman Diane Holley says other
firms have until Nov. 3 to express interest in the contract.
