KIWIFRUIT growers' returns are likely to be down about $1000 a hectare from last year.

However, Mainland Kiwifruit Growers chairman Rod Fry said that was not too bad in the current world economic climate, and better than apple returns.

For Nelson growers who produced both crops, kiwifruit returns would be propping up the apples, he said.

In its latest industry forecast, Zespri has announced a $48 million increase in payments to growers, compared with last season.

Mr Fry said Zespri had done a good job, considering the challenging world economy, and kiwifruit growers were still positive.

Zespri expects final payments to be $827m, or $8.06 a tray, up from $779m, or $7.59 a tray last year. ...
