S uddenly, it's cool to drink South African wine. In the past year, while our consumption of wine from everywhere else has been in gentle decline, imports into Britain from the Cape have grown by a third.

Out of every 100 bottles of wine we now buy to drink at home, 12 are South African, compared to eight from Chile, seven from Spain and just one from Portugal. And the Cape looks likely soon to overtake France and Italy, on 13 each. That would leave only the US on 15 and Australia on 21 to overtake, and move into the number one slot.
