Spirited contests for mayor and several controversial ballot
proposals are claiming the spotlight as 21 communities across the
region prepare to hold local elections Tuesday.
Competitive mayoral fights are the center-stage attractions for
open seats in Lawrence and Newburyport, along with duels between
incumbents and challengers in Lynn and Woburn.
Ballot questions also are generating heat, including in Revere,
where voters will decide whether to stop allowing high school
students to obtain contraceptives at a school-based health clinic;
in Malden, where a proposal to eliminate the city's pay-as-you-
throw trash program is on the ballot; and in Saugus, where voters
