NORMAL - While the objective of a winning season requires three
wins over its final four games, the Illinois State football team has
arrived at a sobering realization.
That goal will not be accomplished unless the Redbird defense
shows improvement.
Entering Saturday's 1 p.m. Missouri Valley Football Conference
game at Missouri State, ISU ranks seventh of nine Valley teams in
scoring defense (29.9 points) and last in rushing defense (223.7
yards) and total defense (400.9).
"We've stunk," Redbird defensive end Doni Phelps said. "We're at
the bottom right now working as hard as we can to play the best we
possibly can."
