Members of West Virginia's business and political elite announced
Tuesday they are on the same page about mining coal: The state needs
it, the country needs it and they're going to fight for it.
Three of the state's five members of Congress, Gov. Joe Manchin,
state lawmakers, several state agency directors, a handful of county
commissioners and more than a dozen coal industry officials met for
an hour and 45 minutes behind closed doors in the Governor's
Mansion.
Afterward, many of them emerged to say they are going to stop
bickering among themselves and fight a federal crackdown on the
water quality permits companies need to do mountaintop removal.
