The Tallis Scholars presented a different sort of Christmas
program at the Terrace Theater on Sunday night. There were no
familiar carols, no red-and-green banners bedecking the halls, no
rousing attempts at holiday cheer. Instead, we were treated to a
long, dignified musical meditation, as nine unaccompanied voices took
us through Renaissance works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina,
Orlandus Lassus, Heinrich Isaac and others, under the leadership of
founder and director Peter Phillips.
The Terrace is unquestionably my favorite among the Kennedy Center
auditoriums, and the only one that could possibly have accommodated a
