Article: Coyaba Dance Theater, a Torrent of Kwanzaa Unity

Coyaba Dance Theater highlighted all seven principles of Kwanzaa at Dance Place on Sunday, but none was more evident than umoja (unity). "In the Spirit of Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family and Community" presented a broad picture of the African American community and African dance.

The youngest and the oldest of the performers warmed the heart with their singing, dancing and drumming. The smallest, a endearing contingent of 4- and 5-year-olds, sang portions of "This Little Light of Mine" and danced, showing that Artistic Director Sylvia Soumah and Assistant Director Marcia Howard have a way with children. The tiny dancers gamely took on the polyrhythms of the West African styles.
