Coyaba Dance Theater highlighted all seven principles of Kwanzaa
at Dance Place on Sunday, but none was more evident than umoja
(unity). "In the Spirit of Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family and
Community" presented a broad picture of the African American
community and African dance.
The youngest and the oldest of the performers warmed the heart
with their singing, dancing and drumming. The smallest, a endearing
contingent of 4- and 5-year-olds, sang portions of "This Little Light
of Mine" and danced, showing that Artistic Director Sylvia Soumah and
Assistant Director Marcia Howard have a way with children. The tiny
dancers gamely took on the polyrhythms of the West African styles.
