Article: Special Education Stressed In Budget; More Teachers, Training Funds Are Proposed

Montgomery County will redouble its efforts next year to improve special education in public schools, with an emphasis on making special education students successful in general education classrooms, according to a proposed school spending plan.

Last week, Superintendent Jerry D. Weast unveiled his budget proposal for fiscal 2006, which would increase spending by more than $109 million over the current budget. About $26 million of the increase would be dedicated to a variety of programs designed to boost student achievement, particularly the achievement of the more than 10 percent of students who qualify as requiring some degree of special education.
