Half an hour's drive east from Faro airport, this fishing town sits on the estuary of the Rio Gilao. Tavira has its own Roman bridge, Moorish citadel and a history linked for centuries with tuna fishing.

Take a walk around Praca da Republica and check out the distinctive Telhados de Quatro Aguas (roofs of four waters) that line the Rua da Liberdade: pyramid-like constructions that permit the Algarve's sudden rainfall to drain away during infrequent showers.
