ALTHOUGH resorts dominate the Algarve, it isn't hard to find
places that offer all the pleasures of a seaside holiday without the
need to cross a golf course to hit the beach.
Tavira
Half an hour's drive east from Faro airport, this fishing town
sits on the estuary of the Rio Gilao. Tavira has its own Roman
bridge, Moorish citadel and a history linked for centuries with tuna
fishing.
Take a walk around Praca da Republica and check out the
distinctive Telhados de Quatro Aguas (roofs of four waters) that line
the Rua da Liberdade: pyramid-like constructions that permit the
Algarve's sudden rainfall to drain away during infrequent showers.
