Article: Schools Chief In Calvert To Retire; Deputy Superintendent Set to Replace Hook

In an announcement that surprised many in Calvert County, public schools Superintendent James R. Hook said last week he will retire in June.

His voice trembling with emotion, Hook told the Board of Education at its meeting Thursday, "Sooner or later you have to make that decision and it just feels like the right time."

Board President Robert L. Gray immediately announced that the school board would offer the top position to deputy superintendent J. Kenneth Horsmon. Horsmon said he would accept.

Hook, 59, had signed a second four-year contract last February. Before being appointed to the post in 1998, he had served as interim superintendent in 1993 and 1997.
