Lily Tomlin, who made a persnickety telephone operator named
Ernestine part of the nation's comedy landscape, has been named this
year's winner of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
The Twain award celebration on Oct. 26 will be televised later on
PBS. The Kennedy Center established the prize six years ago to honor
a lifetime of work that was funny and fearless, that took on the
day's political and social issues, as well as individual foibles.
Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser said that "Lily Tomlin, like
Mark Twain, offers her genius wholeheartedly, as she levels the
playing field all across society and evokes the most healing of all
responses: laughter."
