Georgetown restaurants and bars vie for crowds of tourists and
Alexandria shops slug it out for discriminating antique collectors.
But in the Baltimore suburb of Glen Burnie, the battle rages over
fabric flowers.
Three of the biggest craft stores on the East Coast -- Michaels,
Jo-Ann Stores and A.C. Moore -- have outposts along Ritchie Highway,
the municipality's principal artery. It's the only town in the
Baltimore-Washington metroplex that can make that boast.
Glen Burnie, however, is hardly alone in its enthusiasm for
hobbies and handiwork. The craft business is thriving nationwide, and
