More than four decades after the New York Philharmonic moved out
of Carnegie Hall and became the first constituent of the brand-new
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the orchestra has decided to
return to its former home, most likely by the beginning of the 2006-
07 season.
At the same time, Carnegie Hall and the New York Philharmonic will
merge their boards and operations into one gigantic nonprofit
corporation with an endowment of about $350 million -- this at a time
when many orchestras and presenting organizations throughout the
country are struggling to keep afloat. Administrative duties will be
