Nearly 30 years have passed since Israel Vibration surfaced on the
reggae scene, and though the erstwhile Jamaican trio has been pared
to two members, it continues to make much of the competition's output
seem stilted by comparison. With its familiar trade-off lead vocals,
sweet soul harmonies and recurring themes of struggle, affirmation,
perseverance and optimism, "Fighting Soldiers," the duo's new CD,
won't surprise many longtime fans, but it shouldn't disappoint them,
either.
Topical lyrics pop up here and there, with "Sodom and Gomorrah"
alluding to Jerry Springer and other pillars of the electronic age.
But more often Cecil "Skelly" Spence and Lacelle "Wiss" Bulgin take
turns ...
