For years, people have predicted that the redevelopment of
downtown Wheaton was imminent.
This time, though, it looks like it might really be happening.
Wheaton's mall, a record-setting 1960 shopping center that lost
its glitter years ago, is expanding. And the central business
district is dotted with housing-sale trailers and leveled lots that
mark where hundreds of expensive new apartments and townhouses are on
the way.
"There are people who are kind of shocked to think about upscale
housing in Wheaton, but those units will all be sold before they're
even completed," predicts Marian Fryer, head of the Wheaton Citizens
Coalition and a booster of redevelopment efforts for years.
