Article: Legislators fine-tuning bill on weapons permits/ Compromise would create statewide regulations

DENVER - Lawmakers are close to cinching a compromise on statewide regulations for issuing concealed weapons permits, something that has eluded them for years.

Late Friday, Republican leaders in the House and Democrats in the Senate were fine-tuning carefully crafted wording for legislation that likely will be introduced early next week.

"It would give us some standards, which is something we don't have today," said Senate President Stan Matsunaka, D-Loveland.

State law lets sheriffs and police chiefs choose to issue concealed weapons permits to anyone they want. If they don't want to issue them, they don't have to.

For those who do, there are no standards.
