Article: Time to taste the doughnuts/ Krispy Kreme's good, but it has competition

What's your idea of a great doughnut? Two weeks ago, I would have said: fast, fresh and sweet. Thirty doughnuts later, I know what puts the "ugh" in doughnut - I'll never spell it "donut" again.

But after all that tasting, I have no short answer to what makes a great doughnut except to say this: Krispy Kreme is not always the answer. Sometimes, but not always.

I visited seven of the city's most popular doughnut shops, sampling cake, raised and specialty doughnuts. Ergo:

Best raised doughnut: Yup, those Krispy Kremes hot from the fryer are almost as good as they're hyped to be - they really do melt in your mouth. Also worth a special trip were the raised doughnuts from Woody's Continental ...
