Article: Bill guards safety of kids/ Ski resorts may face regulations for child-care centers

Child-care centers at Colorado ski resorts could remain exempt from state licensing but, for the first time, might be subject to new state regulations under legislation lawmakers are considering.

Senate Bill 114, which has passed the House and the Senate, requires ski resorts to conduct background checks on all child-care employees, have annual inspections by the Health Department and local fire departments and maintain low child-to-staff ratios.

Senate lawmakers are considering House amendments added to the hotly contested bill.

If those amendments are approved, legislators will vote on the bill. If rejected, the bill could get lost in a legislative battle.
