The singer croons the old jazz tune "Stars Fell on Alabama" -
"moonlight and magnolia, starlight in your hair. ... " - in a creamy
voice, backed by the flawless fingerpicking of guitarist Ward
Johnston and his band.
The lights are low and the conversation is hushed. It could be a
jazz club in 1957. But it's not.
This is Jazz Nite at the Colorado Springs Conservatory, and the
musicians are local high school kids who get together to jam every
other Friday. The gathering is just one more piece of evidence that
jazz is alive and mostly well in Colorado Springs, and that those who
say otherwise aren't looking hard enough.
