My mother is a scrupulous homemaker. Polished silver. Ironed
sheets. Crisply made beds. She takes pride in everything she does,
so it's no surprise that when she embarked on a quest for the
perfect chocolate chip cookie, it had to put all others to shame.
I don't know how long it took -- at least an entire summer -- but
she did it. Mom's chocolate chip cookies are the grand finale to
picnics, family dinners -- even formal affairs. When it's her turn
to cook for the church youth leaders, they don't care what she brings
for dinner as long as cookies are part of the package. My husband
reverentially calls them The Cookies. My son bakes only Grammy's
