Article: Recession at hand/ Drought and low water have uneven effects on state's warm-water fishing

Down Charlie Bennett's way, the landscape is getting kind of ugly.

The weather has been hot and dry. Reservoirs in the lower Arkansas Valley are slowly receding. Fishing generally is in its dog-days doldrums, and early last week the wind kicked up.

"It was whipping across the lakes pretty good," said Bennett, the Colorado Division of Wildlife's warm-water fisheries biologist based in Lamar. "It wasn't safe to be out in a boat, and the real estate was blowing by in the wind. It hasn't been real pretty."

Indeed, not. The ongoing drought has affected reservoirs across the state, and warm-water lakes have been among the first to feel the crunch.
